About Classroom Ideas

Looking for new ways to integrate media in the classroom?  Or perhaps you've got some lessons that have always worked for you and you want to share.  Regardless, if you're a classroom teacher and looking to discuss what works for you and what doesn't, you've found the right forum.

I have been thinking of

I have been thinking of adding majors to my world history class. For example, we would still study world history but students would pick one of a nuber of conceptual lenses to view world history thru like fashion, architecture, art, military, religion & philosophy, government and law, and Miltary. I would love to find some people to collaborate with on this.

Hey Glen, you may have

Hey Glen, you may have better luck if you post this as a new thread, not a reply to my "about classroom ideas" thread.  As it is, most people won't see it!  If you create a new thread, it'll get more exposure.

I think that is an awesome

I think that is an awesome idea. I have also been thinking of doing the same in my elementary classroom (1st grade). We have set skills to teach every week, but why not teach those skills through the eyes of famous people or someone with an interesting career? I have implemented some of these ideas with my 'using money' chapter and I am planning to use art related careers when teaching the skill of visualizing.

Hello, I have special needs

Hello,

I have special needs students who have a variety of learning styles.  I am thinking about adding podcasting to the list of learning styles because it allows students to learn in multiple settings.

I notice you mentioned

I notice you mentioned podcasting in your post.  What do you use?  We use garageband and iMovie to do most of ours.  Podcasting is a really neat way to get the students working.  I could see doing repetative stuff for special needs kids being useful.  Also it could be a great assessment tool.  If you gave your students an activity to do they could record themselves answering some of your questions to assess for comprehension.  Using podcast you truly have a ton of different ways you could use them.  It sounds like it would be a great way to interact with your students.

I always liked using links

I always liked using links to US videos and having students create Inspiration projects that embedded those videos. Then the students had to use "Rapid Fire" to brainstorm items that they thought would be convered in the video.  Then after viewing the video, they were to go back and use "Rapid Fire" again to add in the items not listed.  Once the graphic organizer was complete, they would create a report explaining that topic. Report could be written, oral, or media based.

Using powerpoint in the

Using powerpoint in the classroom seems to work well with all students, especially using uniting streaming videos to give examples of real life applications.

Does anyone have lesson

Does anyone have lesson ideas to help teach word problems in mathematics and keep the students interested and engaged?

Sometimes we use a website

Sometimes we use a website the school purchased a subscription to called mathstories.com  It has a lot of word problem examples and sometimes you can get to them for free.  I know they link the math problems to other curriculum also.  They have math problems dealing with Dr. Seuss and other topics. They are cute.

We use a problem solving

We use a problem solving plus sign. It's a big plus sign with addition in the top left, subtraction in the top right, multiplication in the bottom left and division in the bottom right. We teach them that if a problem is addition, the labels in the story will be the same, but the answer will bet larger. If it's subtraction, the labels are the same, but the answer gets smaller. If it's multiplication, the labels are different and the answer gets larger. If it's division, the labels are different, but the answer gets smaller. This seems to work for most problems, not all, of course. But the kids seem to get the point of it and it helps them decide on an operation.

One neat way is to use Excel

One neat way is to use Excel to figure out the problem.  I found a site that has several examples-- http://www.crews.org/curriculum/math/GaETC/spreadsheets.htm, but you can make up your own.
