Good websites for 1st graders in an inner city school

Hi!  I'm new to the DEN and I am looking for other first grade
teachers that teach in a Title I school.  My challenge is I only have 4
computers in the classroom, one of which is an old Mac that won't run
alot of programs that are available on the internet.  My next issue is
that I use the computers in learning centers while I'm working with
small groups and for children who finish work early - so I need sites
that kids can really use without a lot of my guidance.  Since most of them do not have access to computers at home their computer knowledge is not very high but I've been working hard to remedy that with lots of trips to computer lab.  Starfall is
great but they are starting to get bored with that.  We are also using
Stanford Math as an intervention for struggling students in math but I need and
want more. What internet resources are other first grade teachers using
that children can actually USE and don't require a lot of reading on
the part of the child to figure out what to do?

Any ideas?

Hi, Karen. Welcome to the

Hi, Karen.

Welcome to the DEN!

Have you been to http://school.discoveryeducation.com/ ?

Lots of great resources there. Another one is

http://dsc.discovery.com/games/games.html .

There are also a group of games and other cool tools there at there along side the "Interactives". They might not be at the 1st grade level, but check them out to see what you can use. I work with schools in the northeast region of the US including NYC and Boston metro areas and I always look for great tools for inner city schools. Thanks for the tip on Starfall.

Let me know what you think, my email is dennis_swain@discovery.com in case I can help go over any of the resources there.

Hi Karen,

Take a look at the interactive piece of Thinkfinity. There are some great math "games" to reinforce skills. http://www.thinkfinity.org/

Hi Karen, There are tons out

Hi Karen,

There are tons out there, but with every new site you try, there's a little bit of pre-teaching involved.

I use www.starfall.com a LOT with my first grade students.  It's easy to navigate and full of phonics based games, videos, and interactive stories.

I also use www.storylineonline.net quite frequently.  This site has great picture books that are read by actors.  The kids can listen and read along as they go.  Great for language enrichment!

Another great one is www.spellingcity.com .  This site has free accounts for teachers to set up their class spelling words to be used in TONS of games that the kids can manipulate!

One final good one is www.literactive.com .  This website also requires an account (it's free too), but your kids can do lots of pre-reading and reading games that boost their love of books!

Good luck!  Let us know how it goes!
