Interactive Whiteboards

Hi,

I just recently received word that I won a grant to install a Smartboard in my classroom.  I was wondering if anyone had any good resources for ideas of lessons, templates, and instructions.

 Thanks,

Greetings Chris,

Your classroom will never the samewith a new SMARTboard coming.

I  love the notebook lessons that are featured on their site at www.smarttech.com.

Warmly,

Margo in Virginia but I claim Michigan as my birthplace.

As Margo says, "Your classroom will never be the same."

We were able to purchase 7 boards this year and both teachers and students have a blast with the board. One teacher uses it for her DOL.  1 student leads the activity. They call on students to point out the errors and then make the editor mark right on the board.

Another uses interactive math games from Harcourt and has students go up to the board to play the game (they take turns) and sometimes has teams play against each other.

Are there resources or what!?! Have you installed the free SMART Notebook Software? If so, begin with http://www.education.smarttech.com/ste/en-us/ to access hundreds of ready-to-learn activities and free online training modules. Then listen to the weekly SMARTBoard Podcast at http://pdtogo.com/smart. Sign up for the SMART Twitter network while you're there. Follow who Ben and Joan are following. There are several great blogs posting great resources and inspiration for SMARTBoards. My current favorites are http://smartboards.typepad.com/smartboard/ and http://www.whiteboardblog.co.uk/

I can't imagine teaching without my SMARTBoard. It's the best tool I've ever had in my classroom. Hope this posts gets you inspired and on your way to revolutionizing your classroom.

You are extremely fortunate!  A.S.A.P. do the free download so that you can explore.  Go first to the gallery for templates.   If you search for sites, several will come up.  I use mine daily.  Subject is middle school science, but I find myself doing math, L.A., reading strats, etc routinely.   The boost to engagement (I am in a heavily weighted inclusion setting) has made it a fundamental instructional tool in my room!

Chris-

Congratulations!  I won a grant earlier this school year and my classroom, and methods of teaching, will never be the same.  The Smartboard has been a fabulous tool for the students.

I am not sure what subject you teach, however, you can have "virtual field trips" using the board.  Students can explore museums (i.e. Louvre) and explore geography via Google Earth.  I have a short list of "virtual field trip" sites at http://staff.kcsd.org/weblog/tfellows/BoredTrytheseinteractivesite/

My students also love the iQuiz application.  I develop a quiz based on the vocabulary and concepts and classes compete against each other for the highest score.  The application is free at

Best of luck!

chris I have had mine for 3 years now and am terrified that I will lose it as our district is buying only projectors now!!

Where did you get your grant from??

If you teach math you must visit the library of virtual manipulatives (sorry I don;t have the URL handy)

Have fun!!

You can also use my customized Google search to easily find Smartboard Notebook lessons on the web.  Go to http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=016810805021913517955%3Admxqmbl5u0y   This searches the Entire web even though it says 94 sites.  After you enter in a search word and hit return.  You can then click on the Smartboard link at the top to see only Smartboard Notebook files that you can download on that topic.  Generally, the more generic the word, the better the search.

Also, if you have Smartboard Notebook installed on a Windows computer, you can have the Notebook software automatically convert any PowerPoint into Notebook for you.  Load up Notebook and click on file-import and find your PowerPoint.  Within a few minutes, you have it in Notebook format.  It will convert your pictures and words but not linked PowerPoint pages.

Congrats on your grant! We have one in the building that our PTO purchased for us and occassionally, we get to use the district one. The teachers that used it, loved it but there is some discussion in our building as to the benefits of the Smartboard vs. a classroom projector. As of right now, each team (5 teachers) each share a projector. Our goal next year is to get projectors at a ratio of 2:1. My question is, how much more beneficial is the Smartboard v. projectors that can be hooked up to laptops? I love the Smartboard, don't get me wrong, but our classrooms have approx. 30-35 kids in them and teachers kid of frown at the thought of adding something else into their rooms.

Thanks a bunch!

Hi Jen,

Our district went initially with some SMART boards and seems to be going the projector and airliner route now. I have had the SMART Board for 3 years and I LOVE it!! I just recently got an airliner as well and I like that too. I really like the SMART board because the kids can get up and interact with it. The kids enjoy using it as a presentation tool as well. If asked, and money was an object, (Always is, I know!)...I would say go with projectors and airliners for everyone first. THEN, add some SMART boards, The projectors seem like a basic thing to me at this point.
