I was just wondering if anybody has some sample activities to do with sixth graders to help them make a smooth transition to middle school. I was thinking it might be cool to do something with a "Survivior" theme or survival in general.

An activity to survive the first week, day, first hour, etc. could be a bingo like sheet that has boxes and they have go around the room to find someone to sign in that space. It really helps break the ice, build relationships, restore friendships and create bonds so students can feel like they will be strong survivors of sixth grade.
They can also write a letter to themselves to open at the end of the year about their current fears, worries, struggles and concerns of the unknown year. Deliver it on one of the last days of school and they will see how strong they became and survived the entire year.
They can also write a letter to a fifth grader telling how they survived the first day, class, week, etc. and tips to prevent getting lost, making mistakes, losing/forgetting something, etc. and how to open those dreaded lockers.
My students will be doing a story board starting from their last day of elementary school to their completion of their first day of middle school.Their story board should have at least 8 frames. The best story boards will be posted on the board outside my room.
note: I teach Ancient Civilization. This story board is my first assignment. The students will see my first Discovery Education power point that includes three clips from Discovery Streaming.
That's excellent! I also teach in DC Public Schools and have been integrating technology in my teaching. I teach special education middle school and with the Web 2.0 technology and Digital Media Streaming I can get their attention focused to my lessons with the visuals and jeopardy games that I give them.
I would like to meet you one day so we can share our bright ideas!

http://www.betweenyouryears.com/teachers/plan2/Lesson%20plan%2050.doc. Hello, I think that this site might help you out. This lesson can be adapted to meet your needs and style of teaching; it helps the students transition from sixth grade to middle school. The activity (which has group and individual activities) provides the students an opportunity to discuss and write about their fears/expectations. The overall objective is "self-reflection," so the students think that they are focusing on many transitions life (not just from sixth grade to middle school); the assignment covers emotional, social and intellectual challenges. I hope this helps you.
