All of this sounds really interesting. I think my students would really enjoy doing projects like this. How do I go about getting something like this started in my classroom? Any suggestions you can provide me with would be great.

It is fun, but time consuming...so ...knowing that going in...Pick a topic that you research and decide what you can make out of clay to animate. Have the students do the research like you always do. For the clayanimation part, they need to create storyboards of what they want their movies to be. To create the actual clay, Tech4Learning has a great kit that is fabulous to begin with. Check that out! To make the movie is similar to making a flip book. You take a still picture of each movement. You can end up taking a lot of pictures! I use iMovie to put them together, shortening the length of each clip, but there are lots of options out there! Have fun and start small!
Thanks for the information. I don't think I'll have time to do it this school year, but it is something that I want to try with my students next year.

Researching has taken on a new meaning for our second graders! Students research planets, or animals, or whatever the subject may be. They use books and the Internet to gather data. In art class, students create their 3-dimensional habitats or landforms and figures. In class they create scripts and/or storyboards to share their data. Students then take digital pictures, using the stop motion technique. All pictures are them imported into Imovie where students then create a clayanimation to share their data. In music class, third graders use GarageBand to create Musical scores to accompany these videos. Second graders record their voices for any narrative that is needed.Students, classroom teacher, Art teacher, Music teacher, and Information Specialist all working together to make education exciting and meaningful while meeting standards!
