eLearning Kentucky June 2009

Hello, my name is Christi Miller, a K-5 general music teacher in the Boyd County School system in Northeastern Kentucky.   I am looking forward to networking with others and exchanging ideas for the classroom.  I am a new user to Discovery Education and KET Encyclomedia and am very excited about using these learning tools with my students.  I browsed through the educator content and it seems that elementary music content is an area that can use some more input.  As I learn more about posting content I will try to add more to this.   Also, instead of clumping "the arts" all into one category I would like to see them divided separate categories of visual art, music, dance and drama. This would make searching for content much easier.

Hello Everyone,      This

Hello Everyone,

This is Frieda Gebert, your Facilitator of EncycloMedia 2.0 Advanced Techniques, a PD Course offered through E-LearningKY. I see that Christi has navigated the course to this forum. I hope all of you found it pretty easily. I'll be checking to see that everyone gets on board.

Christi I agree completely with your sentiment about separating the various Arts into more specific categories. It would make searching for resources much easier.

I totally agree, Christi!!

I totally agree, Christi!! Last year when I taught arts & humanitites to 8th graders, it would have been faster finding resources if the arts weren't all clumped together!

Hello, everyone! My name is

Hello, everyone! My name is Crystal Thayer. I am a fourth grade teacher in Lewis County, Kentucky. I love KET Encyclomedia! Last year, I perused the site myself and tried to make it work best for my needs...and loved it! However, this summer I attended Fayette County's Technology Conference and won an online PD session FREE! I took advantage of the offer and have learned so much about what I have been missing from this resource. My favorite discovery about KET EM is the calendar and atlas. What a tremendous way to involve our students in events and places around the world! I am so excited to share this treasure with others that I have asked for a spot on our school's opening day agenda. Wish me luck!

Hello, my name is Amy

Hello, my name is Amy Noland-Hughes. This year I will teach music and library to the Pre-School and Kindergarten students in Estill County, Kentucky. I will begin my 21st year of teaching. I can't believe the vast collection of materials in this section of DE. I saw everything "the Mom song" to Constitution Day. Like myself, most educators just go the videos for about 2 seconds. There is so much to explore.

Hello, I am Doris DeVore,

Hello, I am Doris DeVore, Library Media Specialist with South Edmonson Elementary here in Kentucky.   We are a PreK-Fourth grade school, with aproximately 430 students.  This is my thirteenth year teaching, and my seventh as LMS.  Amy, are you only going to have Preschool and Kindergarten students for music and library?  That sounds like such fun!  I love the kindergarteners....they are so excited about whatever you do for them.  I hope you have a wonderful school year.  I was excited to see on the Education Network that parents had a site they could go to also!  How cool is that?  I am not sure how they get in though, but am going to find out.

Hello, my name is Ben Duncan

Hello, my name is Ben Duncan and I teach high school math. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to share information with other math teachers on how to incorporate more elaborate uses of Discovery Education applications in a math classroom. I really am going to try and utilize the folders where my district's math teachers can share more information. I believe by enhancing the use of these folders it would improve the quality of instruction for everyone.

Hello! My name is Beth

Hello! My name is Beth Akers, a middle school math resource teacher in Clark County Public Schools.  I have not used Discovery Education in my classroom, but now I plan on using my new found knowledge in my special needs classes.  I found a baseball mathematics resource that will work well with my boys.  It showed all sorts of ways to apply math to the ball park.  I also found a webcast of mectric conversions made by 6th graders using a bunny hop method.  It was a great way to demonstrate conversions.  I am looking forward to apply Discovery Education and KET Encyclomedia into my lessons.

  Hi, Christi....I'm glad

Hi, Christi....I'm glad you found this place.  It took me a while and if it hadn't been for Dr. Froo, I don't think I would have.  Hope you have a great school year.  I go back tomorrow to start the new year with a new school set-up.  We are no longer a Middle School.  We are now Menifee Elementary K-8.  I hope this all works.  Take care.

Hi, my name is Melissa

Hi, my name is Melissa Moss.  I am a Director of Instructional Technology (Technology Integration Specialist) for the Barren County School District in Glasgow, KY.  Our district has been using KET Encyclomedia for several years, but most of the usage has been just the videos.  We have not focused on all of the other great resources it offers like the assigment & quiz builders or the DEN & so many more.  Part of my job as a TIS is to train educators in our district to use technology resources such as this & after taking this class I plan to make sure teachers are aware of these resources.

I was disapponted to see that no one had submited professional development resources in the DEN.  I would like to know more about how other districts use Encyclomedia & how other trainers present to their districts.  I am sure that teachers in my district can benefit & will be excited to learn about the resources available in Encyclomedia & this Discovery Educators Network.
