Blogging and Podcasting in a Primary Classroom

Hey there:)

I am a 2nd grade teacher down in sunny Florida, and I have begun experimenting with Web 2.0 in my classroom this year.  My student have created several podcasts, but I am often strapped for time to fit it into my schedule.  I am wondering if other primary teachers have ideas to share about what has worked for them to incorporate it into their classroom effectively.

Also, I have flirted with the idea of blogging, but feel that my students may be too young.  Anyone out there have any success stories on this matter?

 Thanks!

Hi, One idea is to have kids

Hi,

One idea is to have kids do a weekly summary of what happened and big learnings in class. We had kids do this in teams, as part of writing each week.  They recorded on Friday and then we listened to it again on Monday.

It was great for connections.

By the way, we used Audacity to record and then posted .mp3 files since we did not have many parents who owned iPods.

Hope that helps!

Your comment made me think

Your comment made me think about how I can utilize podcasting in another way. To inform staff of the learning in our tech lab I often send out written emails. Instead I am going to adapt your idea and try to have students summarize what they did during their time with me in the lab. It would be so much more fun for the teachers to guess as to who is telling them what we have been doing. Thanks

Hi there!      I just

Hi there!

I just stared using podcasts in my 4th grade classroom. I have my students record book reviews and the I put them on my website. I've made Friday our podcast day. Everyone knows that if they want to do a podcast, it needs to be ready by Friday.

My kids have started getting more creative with their podcasts. At first it was just reading a book review, but now they're working with other students and writing reviews based on the perspective of the different characters. I'm very impressed at how creative they've become with podcasting!!

I also have a wiki for each student in my class. Next year I intend on having them blog on their wikis, as well as including their writing, projects and artwork.

Hope this helped! If you'd like to see their podcasts, check out my website. There's also a link for their wikis. www.steveandcat.net/mrswalker
