What is the best document camera for classroom use?

Hi everyone,

I am about to purchase 12 document cameras for our 4 - 6 grade classrooms and I am just not sure what features I should focus on. Please help!

I am looking to spend less than $1,000 each, hoping to get as low as $700. Right now I am looking at a Lumens DC 162, an updated version of the DC 160. I believe it is an anolog camera. Should I opt for a digital version instead? Has anyone used the Lumens DC 160? How did you like it?

I would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!!

I don't use document cameras, but I am sure someone in my PLN does.  I put it out there on Twitter for you.  Hopefully you will get some good advice/help!  The Twitter network is awesome! ~TerylTN DEN LC, Chair

We actually found that we liked the Avervision doccams. They have great vision and extras include: snap on light, take and store pic on the unit, software captures still and video, and works equally as well on Mac and pc.  I think current bid in 450-500 per.

Our district uses the Avervision 330AF and teachers seem to really like it.  I don't do the ordering but it seems as though we get them for around $700.

They are extremely portable and easy to use.  One feature that I like (which may be on most doc cams) is that it has a simple switch to move from projecting the computer to the camera and back again with the push of a button.  It also has an autofocus feature and a 1600x digital zoom.  It's not perfect and there is some delay, but for our purposes it works great.

I like ELMO. We purchased some and teachers love using them with the SMART board. You can easily switch from projector to digital camera during one lesson.

I like the Avermedia.  If you go to their website, which I can't remember the address right now, you can find a way to get one for free.  They do this every year, so this is something that you can think about as well. I personally think that Avermedia is much more user friendly, but that is my opinion.

We have 150 document cameras in our district and use AverVision 300P. We purchased them for about $600 each and haven't had one problem with any of them. The document camera has a hard drive that allows teachers to save snapshots, record video (if the software is installed) and connects through USB to import everything directly into the computer. We have had nothing but great experiences working with AverMedia and they even sent out a trainer for free last summer!

Good Luck!

We just bought 3 of the Lumens. One of the them is the DC-160 and a couple of the DC-133. Our price for the 160 was about $645. We deal with Florida Micro. Your sales rep there would be based on the region you are in. Good luck.
