The Problem of the Week in my math class gives me a chance to see how the students apply what they're learning in class to real-life problems. Here's a classic word problem enhanced with unitedstreaming's Writing Prompt Builder. Robert wanted an allowance. His father gave him a choice of getting it on a weekly or a daily basis. He said he would either pay him $1.25 a week or pay him in the following manner for a week. On Monday he would give him a penny; on Tuesday two pennies; on Wednesday four pennies, with the amount doubling each day until Sunday. Which deal would you tell Robert to accept so he can get a bigger allowance? The attachment is a pdf printout of the problem, and here is a link to the one I've created at unitedstreaming, http://www.unitedstreaming.com/studentCenter/index.cfm?cdCode=W1795-B346 (submitted by Burt Lo, a Northern California DEN member) Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Word Problem
